I am a HUGE fan of ‘national days.’ They are like mini holidays in between the big ones and it just makes life that much more exciting to have (sometimes ridiculous) things to celebrate. Among my list of favorite ‘national days’ are National Pancake Day, National Dog Day and National Donut Day, which is TODAY!!
I’m a big fan of donuts and a holiday to celebrate such an amazing edible is absolutely necessary in my book, but it actually is so much more than that. Even though blogging is more relaxed than normal reporting (have you seen how I write on here??), the journalist comes out in me and I fact check/look into anything I’m writing about… and I had NO IDEA the history behind National Donut Day. Did you know that National Donut Day has been held on the first Friday of June for 100 years?? I did not. In 1938, The Salvation Army in Chicago created a fundraising event to revive the memory of their members who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. Now we celebrate this day every year. Amazing. And oops if I’m the only person in the world who didn’t know this.
So, what perfect timing that a new donut shop just opened in Sarasota. I took my girls last week to check it out and Liv had her first taste of the delicious sweetness that donuts are.
So here’s the scoop on the donut shop — Sift Bakehouse owner, Christine Nordstrom, opened Five-O Donut Co. on Ringling, near the Sarasota Police Department and the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office (hence the cops & donuts theme). For you locals, you might recognize her from Saturday mornings at the Farmer’s Market — she’s the owner of Sift Bakehouse (my favorite treats in town, seriously…I order her Lucy Mae cake for anything and everything I’m doing that requires a cake). The shop just opened about 3 weeks ago and Nordstrom told me she’s been selling anywhere between 60-150 dozen donuts a day… Y’ALL. People in Sarasota can eat some donuts! My Instagram feed has been flooded with images of her place/donuts/mugshots and while I was there I ran into like 3 people I knew. It’s that poppin’. So if you haven’t already, go check it out. The shop is located at 2241 Ringling Blvd. And while you’re there, don’t forget to take a picture in front of the height strip wall with her ‘mugshot’ letter boards 🙂
She offers an amazing variety of donuts, plus some cold brews and infused milks (think, fruity pebbles infused milk….YUM), amongst other things. A few notable donut creations — 1) Cherry Pie, which is a yeast raised glazed with cherry pie filling and pie shell crust crumbles 2) the CHIPS, which is a chocolate cake, chocolate dipped, chocolate chip and Ruffles potato chip donut and 3) the Go Shorty, which is a yeast raised, birthday cake Oreo donut. For their full menu, check out their Instagram (Five-O Donut Co.).
I love trying crazy donut creations, but my go-to donut is a cronut and omg. The Five-O cronut is AMAZING. So good. So flaky. Just right. Crispy crust. Moist layers inside. The sweet glaze. I might be heading there right now to get one 🙂
Also, how cool is this jacket I found at Target?! I saw a similar one a while back at Anthropologie and loved it, but couldn’t justify the price, so I was so excited when I found this one. I’m big on jackets and cardigans, so throwing this on over a simple tank makes this casual outfit so much more fun. Hope y’all are having the best Friday and have an amazing weekend!
